Truck rams Ranau schoolgirls walking home from school; 1 killed, 2 injured

RANAU: A secondary school student was killed and another injured when they were rammed by a tow truck while walking home from school along Jalan Ranau-Telupid near Kampung Matupang here yesterday.

Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Matupang student Nor Aliz Khairunnisya Azazahari, 16, died on the spot; while her peer Elcy Hairyson, 15, suffered a broken right leg and head wounds in the 3.30pm incident.

It is learnt that the 33-year-old tow truck driver was heading from Ranau towards Telupid to pick up a Toyota Land Cruiser involved in an accident at Jalan Kota Kinabalu-Sandakan.

“While on his way to get the Land Cruiser and upon arriving at a junction, the tow truck swerved to the right and hit the two girls, who were almost reaching their homes.

“The driver suffered a broken right leg and internal wounds.

“All (three individuals) were rushed to the district hospital,” said District police chief Deputy Superintendent Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah.

The driver tested negative for alcohol, while the weather and road conditions were good at the time.

Farhan said the case is being investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transportation Act 1987 (for causing death by reckless driving).
