Driver on drugs rams men walking towards mosque, 3 killed, 3 injured

TELUK INTAN: Three Pakistani men were killed while three others were severely injured when they were hit by a car driven by a man who was on drugs.

It is learnt that the victims were walking along Jalan Teluk Intan-Bidor to a nearby mosque for Aidilfitri prayers yesterday when the accident happened.

Hilir Perak district police chief Assistant Commissioner Ahmad Adnan Basri said preliminary investigations showed the 36-year-old driver lost control of his vehicle and crashed into six men who were walking on the road shoulder.

"Three of the victims, aged between 20 and 35, died on the spot during the incident. Three others, who were severely injured, were rushed to the Teluk Intan Hospital here for treatment," Ahmad Adnan said in a statement last night.

He said the car driver's urine test came back positive for cannabis. The driver has since been arrested.

The case is being probed under Section 44(1) of the Road Transport Act for causing death while driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

"The police have also seized the car which will be sent for inspection at Puspakom," he said.

Members of the public with information on the case are urged to contact investigating officer Inspector Mohd Amirrudin Shafei at 013 - 9126959 or 05-6122222.
