35 Kampung Ovai residents trapped by floods

PAPAR: Rescuers in the district are trying to reach 35 people cut off by floods which have hit six houses in Kampung Ovai, here, last night.

The flood incident also saw a homestay, D Buguk Homestay, being swept away by strong current.

Police said no casualty was reported so far and assured rescue effort is underway to bring the victims out of the area.

Papar police chief Deputy Superintendent Ladamah Sulaiman said the rescue team, comprising the district police, district Fire and Rescue Department, Civil Defence Department, was being prepared for the operation.

"We have determined that 35 victims; 14 men, 11 women, 9 boys and a girl were among those trapped.

"The operation to evacuate the victims is underway and the team is also mindful of the raging water," he said when contacted.

Ladamah said checks showed despite the strong current recorded at Sungai Ovai, the flood situation has yet to reach the 'danger level'.

"So far, no relief centres have been opened." he said.
