Negri Sembilan to launch food bank tonight

SEREMBAN: With the worrisome number of children and adolescent on the streets, the Negri Sembilan state government will launch its own ‘Food Bank’ which aims to help provide food for the homeless and the needy in the state.

Menteri Besar, Aminuddin Harun said the initiative, to be launched tonight, would be led by the state’s Women’s Affairs, Family and Welfare Committee chairman, Nicole Tan Lee Koon.

“Not only food, the initiative will also help to provide other necessities such as clothes and personal care items for them. For a start we will go around Seremban to help them,” he said.

Aminuddin added, various hotels, supermarkets and companies have agreed to join and provide food and other supplies for the programme.

On whether the effort would discourage the homeless from finding jobs to provide for themselves, Aminuddin said, the public needed to look on the bigger picture of the matter.

“Some of them landed on the streets because they are left with no choices and some of them are mentally disabled. We must help them so that gradually they will be able to help themselves one day,” he said during a press conference after chairing the state’s weekly exco meeting at Wisma Negeri held here, today.

Aminuddin said, at the moment, the programme would be conducted once a week and would be extended to other districts in the state.
