Government not involved in freezing of TAFF account

TAWAU: The government has nothing to do with the Tunku Azizah Fertility Foundation's (TAFF) bank account being frozen, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

Wan Azizah said the matter involved an internal problem between the foundation and the bank itself.

"I've instructed to find the answer why and I was told it is an internal problem between the two quarters.

"(The government) is not involved and I believe this matter can be solved amicably," she told reporters after attending a gathering event and the Tawau parliamentary constituency's Hari Raya open house here, today.

Wan Azizah also said she did not know whether the freezing of TAFF acount has any relation to the investigation into 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).

"I have no idea because this is not a governmental department... The probe against 1MDB is an independent investigation and we do not interfere with it.

"We leave the investigation to the relevant quarters but if there is any government funds taken, we want it to be returned," she said.

It was reported yesterday that TAFF founder Tengku Puan Pahang Tunku Azizah Maimunah Iskandariah expressed disappointment that the foundation's HSBC Bank account was frozen without any notification or reason.

Taking to her official Twitter account @cheminahsayang, Tunku Azizah Maimunah said they only realised the matter after a cheque issued was returned.

Tunku Azizah did however tweet that the bank had in December last year asked her to declare the assets of her committee members but she forgot to reply.

"Last December, HSBC did write to me, asking me to declare the assets of my committee members, but I forgot to reply them and then they (the bank) froze my account in June," she had said.

Meanwhile on the issue of an 11-year-old girl marrying a 41-year-old man, Wan Azizah who is also Women and Family Development Minister, said she would call on all quarters to discuss on the matter.

She said a meeting was scheduled tomorrow involving the Welfare Department, the Syariah Court and other relevant agencies.

"This is to ensure we can give our attention to the child in line with our responsibility to ensure the rights of a child is protected," she said.
