KUALA LUMPUR: RapidKL said it will compensate the owners of vehicles struck by a rampaging bus along Jalan Ampang here last night.
The company also apologised to the public over the incident.
Seven cars were damaged after they were rammed into by the runaway bus as its 32-year-old driver was fleeing a group of angry motorcyclists.
Four people were hurt in the mayhem.
"(RapidKL) apologises for the incident. (However), we have yet to receive the full details (of the event) and the cause has yet to be determined," said its chief executive officer Shamsul Rizal Mohd Yusof.
He called on the affected vehicle owners to contact the company’s helpline at 03 7885 2585 for further action.
"The vehicle owners (must first) go through some procedures to claim compensation (and to make) a police report," he told a press conference at RapidKL’s Maluri depot.
Shamsul said RapidKL’s operation centre received information about the incident at 8.30pm; and that the bus involved was plying the Datuk Keramat-Ampang Point route.
He said RapidKL will cooperate with the authorities to facilitate an investigation on what happened.
As for the driver, Shamsul said he has a good track record and has been with the company for two years.
“He was working a direct shift (on Thursday). There is a possibility that he was overworking,” he said.
It is understood that the driver was beaten by members of the public after he was caught fleeing the scene of the accident.
“He is now receiving treatment at Ampang Hospital," Shamsul added.
According to KL’s Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department chief Assistant Commissioner Zulkefly Yahya, the driver is currently under police custody at the hospital and will undergo a urine test.
When asked if the bus had any technical problems, Shamsul said they have yet to conduct a full inspection of the vehicle as it has been impounded at the Pandan Indah police station.
"(But we) always make sure our busses are in good condition before every trip,” he added.
