Downtown JB crippled by massive blackout; power yet to be restored

JOHOR BARU: A power outage struck the city centre and surrounding areas at 1.04pm today and electricity has yet to be restored.

There are widespread reports of massive traffic jams along major roads due to non-functioning traffic lights, and people stuck in lifts in highrises across the city.

Among the worst hit areas is Jalan Tebrau connecting Taman Pelangi and Taman Century with the city centre, which is congested due to non-functioning traffic lights.

However hospitals; the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine complex; and most commercial buildings and other premises are continuing to operate on backup generators.

“The disruption affected the Komtar building, the JB Central building, the Sultanah Aminah Hospital, Taman Century and Jalan Yahya Awal,” said Johor Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) general manager Datuk Baderul Sham Saad when contacted.

He said that power was disrupted due to a faulty city main entrance substation (PMU) at Jalan Datuk Abdul Rahman Andak here.
