Duyong assemblyman wants to redevelop Hang Tuah Village into theme park

MELAKA: Duyong assemblyman Damian Yeo plans to redevelop and turn the Hang Tuah Village in his constituency here into a theme park in a bid to draw more domestic and foreign tourists.

He said the Hang Tuah Village, which comprises the Hang Tuah Centre, Hang Tuah Well, House of Traditional Customs, as well as a Batik Gallery, would be redeveloped into a special live theme park, like those available overseas.

“Most of the tourists who came to the Hang Tuah Village were only taken to Hang Tuah Well and were not given the chance to explore the whole area which has other interesting attractions,” he told Bernama here today.

He said based on the feedback he received, foreign tourists were interested to experience local cultures and know local history.

Yeo said he planned to include the theme park tour in the Visit Melaka Year 2019 package at a reasonable price.

The assemblyman said when the theme park was in place, local villagers would be given the opportunity to earn extra income by selling various items such as traditional food, handicraft and so on provided they wore traditional Malay clothes to attract the tourists.

He also hoped that the theme park would help boost the local economy.

“I will discuss this matter thoroughly with all the relevant parties,” he said.

The assemblyman also said he planned to organise a carnival called ‘Jom Fiesta At Kampung Hang Tuah’ from Oct 25 to 28 as a trial run.

Among the activities lined up for the fiesta were a fishing competition at Sungai Duyong, traditional games, traditional dance performances, ‘explorerace’, a decorative trishaw competition and many more.– BERNAMA
