Two young girls killed attempting to cross the road

MARUDI: Two young girls, with one of them just three-years-old, were killed in an accident at Jalan Bakong near Sekolah Kebangsaan Long Lapok, here, this morning.

In the 10.35am incident, Carin Tigan, 10 and her niece Monica Ubong, died after a pickup truck ran into them while they were crossing the street.

Sarawak Traffic Investigation and Enforcement department head Supt Alexson Naga Chabu said both sustained severe head and bodily injuries which led to their deaths.

According to him, initial investigation found that both victims were crossing the street when the vehicle which was travelling from Bakong to Lapok hit them.

He informed that the girls were pronounced dead at the Beluru Clinic.

"The driver is a 28-year-old male and he did not sustain any injuries," Alexson said.

He added that the remains of both victims were sent to the Miri Hospital for post-mortem.

"The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987," he said.
