Female teacher duped by foreign acquaintance of RM14K

KUANTAN: A female teacher here lost RM14,000 as payment for ‘shipping fees’ for gifts she was supposed to receive from a male foreign acquaintance who claimed to live in England.

Pahang Commercial Criminal Investigation Department chief Supt Mohd Wazir Mohd Yusof said the 46-year-old victim said she got to know the suspect who claimed to be an engineer named Rashid Jerome Mohd Dan, on Oct 1 on social media.

Rashid said the victim was that told the man was based in England he would use an overseas number to communicate with the victim on WhatsApp.

“She said the suspect claimed he wanted to send her an iPhone, jewellery and USD100,000 in cash, supposedly as a mark of their friendship.

“The victim was then contacted by a female suspect who introduced herself as a freight forwarder on Monday (Oct 15) informing her that she had to pay for the delivery of the goods,” he told reporters here today.

Mohd Wazir added that the victim who lived in Taman Perdana, Jerantut near here, made 14 transactions totalling RM14,000 into the bank account given by the suspect.

The suspect allegedly threatened the victim that the latter would face legal action if she did not continue to make payments, and this aroused the victim’s suspicions.

She lodged a police report at the Jerantut District Police Headquarters yesterday. – BERNAMA
