Kelantan Mufti: Dec 8 rally should not go on

KOTA BHARU: Kelantan Mufti Datuk Mohamad Shukri Mohamad thinks that the rally to reject the implementation of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD) on Dec 8 should not go on.

He said the rally, should it continue amidst the ‘heated’ situation now, would only invite bad things. At the same time, he said there was a possibility that some quarters might create trouble during the assembly.

“Even in Islam, when we want to achieve something, we should consider the good and the bad. If there’s more bad than good, why would we continue?

“People might take advantage to spark riot in a rally like this. In my opinion, it’s better if this rally is not taking place,” he said when contacted today.

Commenting further, Mohamad Shukri said there was no reason for the rally to go on since the government already decided not to implement ICERD.

“If we want to show our gratitude over the decision, then I suggest we perform a ‘solat hajat’ and ‘solat kesyukuran’ at the mosque,” he said.

Previously, the government had announced that it would not be implementing the United Nations International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD).

In a brief statement, the Prime Minister’s Office said the government would also continue to uphold the Federal Constitution and the agreed upon social contract enshrined within.
