Two more die in Lipis accident, bringing death toll to 6

KUANTAN: Two victims who were warded in hospital following the fatal crash involving two cars at Km 16 Jalan Lipis-Benta near Simpang Taman Jelai in Lipis yesterday succumbed to their injuries today.

The death toll of the incident, which occurred about 3.50pm, now stands at six.

District police chief Superintendent Azry Akmar Ayob said the two victims were Zalimawati Mukhtar, 34, and her 10-year-old daughter Zulaikha Basyirah Ahmad Ridwan who were travelling in the Proton Waja.

“Zalimawati died while receiving treatment at Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital in Kuantan while Zulaikha died in Kuala Lipis Hospital,” he said in a statement today.

Azry Akmar said both victims died due to severe head injuries.

The accident yesterday claimed the lives of Proton Waja driver Mukhtar Hassan, 52, his wife Khatijah Hussin, 61, and their grandson Ahmad Fakhrul Muslim Ahmad Ridhwan, 2.

Military personnel Muhammad Samsol Kamal Mat Ariffin, 22, who was driving a Perodua Myvi, was also killed in the crash.

Azry Akmar said investigations revealed the Proton Waja was heading towards Kuala Lipis from Benta, while the Perodua Myvi was travelling in the opposite direction.

“The driver of the Perodua Myvi failed to overtake the vehicles in front him and crashed his car into the Proton Waja, which was occupied by eight people including the driver,” Azry Akmar said.

“Khatijah and Muhamad Samsol Kamal died on the spot while Mukhtar and Ahmad Fakhrul died at Kuala Lipis Hospital. Four other victims, including Shamsol’s wife, suffered light injuries and were sent to Kuala Lipis Hospital for treatment,” he said.
