Ops Selamat Chinese New Year to focus on 10 accident hotspots in KL

KUALA LUMPUR: As accidents increase every year in and around the city, Kuala Lumpur police has earmarked 10 accident hotspots for Ops Selamat Chinese New Year 2019 that will be heavily monitored during road safety campaigns.

“These hotspots have seen a rise in the number of road accidents, so we will be extra vigilant to bring down the figures this year.

“They are Jalan Kepong, Jalan Cheras, Jalan Ipoh, MRR2, Jalan Tun Razak, Jalan Kuching, Jalan Ampang, Jaan Klang Lama, Jalan Duta and Jalan Sungai Besi,” said city police commissioner Datuk Seri Mazlan Lazim.

Mazlan was speaking to reporters after launching Ops Selamat 14 in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebration.

Mazlan said the number of accidents from Ops Selamat 12 (2017) to 13 (2018) have seen a huge increase from 2363 to 2586 which was a 9.43% increase and vehicle damage increased from 2299 to 2550, a 10.9% increase.

“We identified these hotspots from statistics and will take proactive actions to educate road users on safe driving,” he said.

For the road safety campaign, KL police has CCM Duopharma Biotech Bhd to present the road safety educational campaign.

MotoGP champion Hafiz Syahrin Abdullah was also revealed in today’s campaign launch as the face of the campaign.

Hafiz was officially signed on as the ambassador for CCM Duopharma which is a co-partner in the road safety campaign.

In a short preview of the video campaign, Hafiz is shown as advising motorcycle users on proper road usage.

Mazlan said Hafiz was an important icon because the target of the campaign were motorcycle users.

“Motorcycle users are our priority because they are most vulnerable on the road.

“Hafiz is an icon to many youths and we hope this education initiative will have a big impact during this campaign,” he said.

Mazlan said Ops Selamat 14 will be on for 15 days, from Jan 22 to Feb 12.

A total of 13 top officers and 186 members of the police force will be in the road to ensure road safety.
