Penang Bridge tragedy: Toyota Vios driver out on bail

BUKIT MERTAJAM: The driver of the Toyota Vios, who allegedly rammed into a Mazda CX-5 sports utility vehicle (SUV) at Km4 of the Penang Bridge, has been released on police bail.

The accident, at 2.54am on Sunday, resulted in the Mazda CX-5 plunging into the sea.

The driver was released at 6.45pm from the Seberang Prai Tengah district police headquarters' traffic branch, here.

He was spotted wearing a cap, a t-shirt and black tracksuit.

He came down from the top floor and immediately walked into a waiting Perodua Viva, believed to be driven by a female relative.

Both did not talk to pressmen who had waited since 5pm.

Earlier today, the 21-year-old hairstylist surrendered himself to police.

Seberang Prai Tengah district police chief Assistant Commissioner Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abd Hamid said he surrendered himself at the district police headquarters at 2am today after which he was arrested and placed in the lock-up to assist in investigations.

The man, who sustained injuries in the incident, was initially warded at the Seberang Jaya Hospital. He then sought further treatment at a private hospital on the island.

He was accompanied by family members to the police station.

Nik Ros Azhan said police have so far recorded 15 statements from various quarters.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Police had recently revealed that both drivers were friends, and that the Toyota Vios driver was driving under the influence of drugs.

Yesterday, rescuers successfully winched out the badly damaged SUV from the sea after a three-day search and rescue (SAR) operation and several failed attempts.

The SUV's driver, Moey Yun Peng, a 20-year-old private college student, was still strapped to the driver's seat. His wallet was also found inside his pocket.

His remains were sent to the Seberang Jaya Hospital for post-mortem last night.

Nik Ros Azhan said Moey’s cause of death has been classified as “drowning in an individual involved in a road traffic collision".
