406 traffic notices issued by Penang RTD in Op Khas

BUKIT MERTAJAM: A total of 406 traffic notices were issued by Penang Road Transport Department during Op Khas conducted since Jan 29 in conjunction with the Chinese New Year period.

State RTD director Mohamat Johari Mat Nor said among the offences were driving without license (68 cases), expired road tax (42), and overload vehicles (33).

“Other offences are beating red lights, using mobile phones while driving, driving on emergency lane and driving on worn-out tyres.

“A total of 140 staff are involved in the operation conducted until Feb 12. It focuses on motorcycles and other private vehicles, as well as public service and goods vehicles,” he told a Press conference after participating in a joint-operation involving motorcyclists at the Penang Bridge last night.

He said 728 motorcycles have been checked with 122 notices and summons were issued throughout the operation last night.

“Nine immigrants, including two children, were also detained for overstaying and a 19-year-old male teenager was nabbed for riding a stolen motorcycle,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mohamat Johari said checks on buses at depots and main terminals would also be held during the festive season.

He said a team from RTD’s automotive engineering division would be deployed to carry out technical inspection on the vehicles.

“We will also conduct checks on additional buses (deployed during festive season). A total of 198 buses have been inspected during Op Khas, with actions taken on four of them. We have also issued a notice on a bus which was found to have been running on worn-out tyres and identified five technical cases involving damaged emergency doors and broken mirrors,” he said.
