Six-vehicle Pekan pileup kills 2, injures 6, including baby

PEKAN: Two people were killed and six others, including an 11-month-old baby, were injured in a six-vehicle pileup at Km66 of Jalan Kuantan-Segamat here, yesterday.

The deceased were identified as motorcyclist Abdul Jamil Abdul Rahman, 51 and Proton Wira passenger Sahripah Bachok, 62.

The injured were Isuzu Dmax driver A. Rajasaigaran, 59; Proton Wira passenger Afif Haffaz Mohammad Wahiddin, eight; his brother Aqyas Fawwaz Mohamad Wahiddin, 13; Proton Wira driver Muhammad Shuaib Ismail, 26; his wife Restyiena Sakinah Mee Chui, 25; and their infant son Muhammad Khairul Thaqif.

It is understood that baby Muhammad Khairul suffered severe head injuries.

The 3.30pm accident was triggered when the Isuzu Dmax, en route to Segamat, grazed a Proton Iswara, which was heading in the opposite direction.

“The (Isuzu Dmax) spun into the opposite lane and collided with the Proton Wira and Abdul Jamil’s motorcycle.

“The Proton Iswara, in turn, skidded into the opposite lane and collided with a Proton Saga. The driver and passenger of the Iswara; and the driver of the Saga were unhurt,” said Pekan District police chief Superintendent Amran Sidek.

He said both the bodies and the injured were sent to the Pekan Hospital.

Baby Muhammad Khairul, meanwhile, was rushed to the Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital, Amran added.
