Four 'keropok' stalls near Pasar Besar Kedai Payang destroyed in fire

KUALA TERENGGANU: Four stalls selling keropok and other food items near the Pasar Besar Kedai Payang here were destroyed in a fire.

In the 11.38pm incident last night, one stall was completely destroyed while three others were 50 per cent burnt.

A trader, Ibrahim Abdullah, 64, said he was shocked to see his stall on fire while he was just at a nearby shop to buy a drink.

“I wanted to close my shop for the night, but I went to buy a drink first. However, as I approached my shop, I saw the fire and quickly called for help.

“Fortunately, the fire station is located about 200m from the stalls, otherwise, the fire might spread further to other shops,” he said, adding that he suffered RM30,000 loss.

The other three stalls were not in business during the time of incident.

Meanwhile, Jalan Kota Fire and Rescue Station operation commander Mohd Zuhan Shafei said the station received a call at 11.41pm.

“Three engines from here and Kuala Terengganu with 16 personnel rushed to the scene to douse the fire.

“We managed to control the fire at 11.53pm and it was completely put out 25 minutes later. No death was reported and the cause and losses are still being investigated,” he said when met at the scene.
