Sepang fatal bus crash company has licences suspended

PUTRAJAYA: CJ Global Travel and Tours Sdn Bhd has had its operating and vehicle licences suspended in light of the bus crash in Sepang earlier this month, which saw 12 people killed.

The Land Public Transport Agency (Apad) said the decision was reached based on the findings in the Industrial Code of Practice (ICOP) safety audit.

The audit was conducted by the Road Transport Department and Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros).

“The investigation discovered that the said company had failed to comply with ICOP safety requirements.

“And, this is a violation of the terms and conditions as stipulated under Section 22 and Section 41 of the Land Public Transport Act 2010,” it said in a statement.

The company, it added, was slapped with a seven-day suspension or until it fully complied with the ICOP safety requirements, whichever is longer.

“Under the Land Public Transport Act 2010, passenger safety is of paramount importance.

“All land public transport operators need to uphold the highest standards when operating their vehicles.

“The agency will not tolerate any breach of safety practices.

“Operators who fail to comply with the ICOP safety requirements may be subject to action under the provisions of the laws and regulations including having their operator licenses and permits revoked,” said Apad.

The crash occurred at 11.10pm on April 7 as the Malaysian driver of the bus was sending 43 foreign contract workers to the MASKargo Complex at Kuala Lumpur International Airport for their midnight shift.

The bus had plunged into a storm drain, killing the driver and eight of his passengers. Three others died in hospital while receiving treatment.

All the other passengers were injured, to varying degrees, in the incident.
