Drunk driver crashes car into Penang kuih stall, killing woman, injuring man

KEPALA BATAS: A man driving under the influence of alcohol and illicit drugs lost control of his vehicle before it slammed into a roadside kuih stall along Jalan Raya, Bertam Indah here, this morning.

The 10am crash killed 40-year-old stall owner Roslinda Mohamad Isa; while her 44-year-old husband, Mat Subri Saad, sustained serious injuries.

It is understood that Roslinda was flung several metres onto the road as a result of the impact. She was pronounced dead at the Emergency Ward of the Kepala Batas Hospital, where Mat Subri is currently being treated.

The 31-year-old driver of the Proton Saga Iswara, which was heading towards Paya Keladi, was unhurt in the accident.

According to police, the driver had a high blood alcohol level and also tested positive for marijuana.

“Traffic was smooth and the weather was good during the time of the accident.

“We have detained the driver. He will be remanded to assist in the investigation of the case,” Seberang Prai Utara police chief Assistant Commissioner Noorzainy Mohd Noor said in a statement today.

He added that the probe is being carried out under Section 44(1) of Road Transport Act 1987.
