[UPDATE] Floods: 2,598 victims in T'ganu, Kelantan evacuated this morning

KUANTAN: The number of Terengganu flood evacuees increased to 2,274 people as of 8am today.

The latest update from the state disaster management agency showed 640 families from Setiu, Besut, Hulu Terengganu and Dungun have been evacuated from their homes to safety.

The number of temporary evacuation centres (PPS) opened has also increased across the affected districts; from 38 centres as of midnight to 40 this morning.

In Besut, 1,148 victims from 290 families have taken shelter at 21 flood relief centres;

Setiu has 10 PPS operational with 533 victims from 189 families; Hulu Terengganu has five PPS accommodating 90 victims from 27 families and Dungun has 483 victims from 134 families seeking shelter at four PPS.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department has warned of wet weather conditions in the East Coast would continue up until Monday.

It said all Terengganu districts will be experiencing heavy downpour especially Hulu Terengganu.

Meanwhile in KELANTAN, the number of flood evacuees sent to relief centres rose to 315 today, from only 79 recorded yesterday.

The victims, from 89 families, were now housed at 11 relief centres in Tanah Merah, Kuala Krai and Machang.

Meanwhile, two rivers in the state have breached their warning level this morning following heavy rain since Thursday night.

The Golok river in Rantau Panjang was at 8.73m (0.73m above its warning level of 8m (the river's danger level is 9m) while the Lebir river in Tualang, Kuala Krai was measured at 31.44m (0.44m above its warning level of 31m).
