Sarawak keen on setting up Digital Bank

KUCHING: Sarawak plans on setting up a Digital Bank and will apply for a license from the Federal Government.

Its chief minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Abang Openg said this was in applauding Malaysia's initiative to begin issuing Digital Bank licenses.

"If possible, the state government would like to obtain the license as we already have our own e-wallet application, the Sarawak Pay.

"I also hope the Federal Government will consider granting us this license," he said when met after officiating the KCGC Innovation Hub at the Kuching Chinese General Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCGCCI) hall at Wisma Chinese Chambers, here, yesterday.

Also present were Sarawak's Local Government and Housing minister Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian, state Transport minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin and Tourism, Arts and Culture state junior minister Datuk Sebastian Ting.

Elaborating on Sarawak pay, Abang Johari said the e-wallet application has also collaborated with global e-wallet platform Union Pay in China.

This enables Sarawak Pay transactions to penetrate the China market, as well as Europe, he remarked.

"This means Sarawak Pay transactions can be used anywhere with Union Pay, specifically China and Europe," Abang Johari said.
