Mixed reactions to cashless system

PUTRAJAYA: The Immigration Department’s cashless system has received mixed reactions from the public.

Some lauded the move, saying that it sped up transactions, but others said they preferred paying with cash.

Fadhilah Uyop, 31, who went to the Putrajaya Immigration Department to renew her passport, said she was pleased with the e-payment system.

“I used my debit card for the payment. It was quick and easy.

“Previously, it would have taken me close to an hour to get my passport renewed. Today, I got it done in less than half an hour.”

“The cashless system makes everybody’s job easier.”

Norbe Md Nor, who went to the Putrajaya Immigration Department from Jelebu, Negri Sembilan, with her husband, said she found the new system a hassle.

“I prefer the traditional way of doing things. Not many people my age carry a debit or credit card,” said Norbe, who is in her 60s.

“It’s okay for the department to implement the cashless system, but it should offer options, like a counter for cash payments.”

Norbe said she learnt of the cashless system only when she went to the counter.

“I came to renew my passport with my husband. But I was told it didn’t accept cash anymore. Luckily, my husband brought his debit card and helped me with the payment.”

She said the department should take several matters into consideration before fully implementing the cashless system.

“Some people take hours to come here, only to be turned down when they want to pay with cash. This is a waste of time and effort. They should not inconvenience those who choose not to go cashless.”
