42 killed on Malaysian roads over last 4 days

KUALA LUMPUR: Forty-two people were killed in road accidents nationwide since Jan 18 – the first day of “Op Selamat 16”, which was activated for the Chinese New Year holiday travel rush.

Twenty-eight of the deceased were motorcyclists and/or pillion riders, Bernama reported.

In total, 4,971 road accidents occurred, involving 7,480 vehicles, since Saturday.

Selangor witnessed the highest number of accidents at 1,557 cases, followed by Johor (786 cases) and Kuala Lumpur (548 cases).

“A total of 70,804 summonses were also issued during that period,” said Bukit Aman Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department director Datuk Azisman Alias.

Op Selamat 16, which ends on Feb 1, is aimed at curbing six major traffic offences: driving in the emergency lane, overtaking on double lines, using mobile phones while driving, cutting queue, speeding, and not obeying traffic lights.
