Almost 100 killed on Malaysian roads in one week

KUALA LUMPUR: Up to 97 people were killed in traffic accidents nationwide over the past seven days following the launch of Op Selamat, which was initiated in conjunction with the Chinese New Year travel rush.

Motorcyclists and pillion riders accounted for 71 of the 97 deaths, Bernama reported.

The past week saw at total of 11,788 road crashes involving 17,901 vehicles, with Selangor recording the highest number of accidents at 3,611 cases, followed by Johor (1,824), Kuala Lumpur (1,432) and Penang (978).

“A total of 178,906 summonses were issued during the same period,” Bukit Aman Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department director Datuk Azisman Alias said in a statement on Sunday.

He said that 110,872 of the summonses were issued on six major offences: using mobile phones while driving, beating traffic lights, driving over speed limits, misusing emergency lanes, cutting queues and overtaking on double lines.

Op Selamat ends on Feb 1.
