Police: Man's death in Bentong lock-up not Covid-19-related

BENTONG: The death of a 30-year-old detainee at the district police station lock-up here on Sunday is not linked to Covid-19.

District police chief Superintendent Yusof Unis said a Covid-19 test conducted on the body at the Bentong Hospital came back negative.

“A post-mortem was carried out yesterday, but the cause of death has yet to be determined. So we are now waiting for the toxicology analysis results from the Chemistry Department and body tissue sample analysis.

“The death has nothing to do with Covid-19 and we have classified the case as sudden death until we receive the detailed test results," he said in a statement today.

In the incident during the early hours of Sunday, the man, who was detained on April 2 to facilitate investigations under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft, was reported to have complained of breathing difficulties.

It is learnt that the police had alerted the hospital for assistance, but the victim died before the medical team arrived.
