KL man goes berserk, rams 4WD into crowd, injuring five

KUALA LUMPUR: A man, believed to be drunk, went berserk and rammed his 4-wheel-drive vehicle (4WD) into a crowd at a hawkers' centre in Pekan Bukit Sentosa, here, yesterday.

In the 6.35pm incident, the 32-year-old man became enraged when a pedestrian knocked into the sideview mirror of his vehicle as he was stuck in congestion near Jalan Besar Bukit Sentosa.

It is understood that the man then shouted that he would ram his vehicle into everyone – and proceeded to barrel into people milling about at the Persiaran Orkid hawkers' site.

Four men and a woman, aged between 40 and 50, were injured in the incident, said Hulu Selangor district police chief Superintendent Arsad Kamaruddin.

He added that two cars, two motorcycles and two canopies at the site were damaged.

Meanwhile, Selangor police chief Datuk Noor Azam Jamaludin said the man, a tyre wholesaler, does not have a criminal record.

He added that the case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code and Section 42 (11) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

"An application to remand the suspect has been filed, and police urge any witness who was at the scene to come forward to help in the investigation," he said in a statement here.

Noor Azam advised the public not to make any assumptions about the incident and to have full confidence in the police to conduct a thorough investigation.
