Ismail Sabri: Number of insterstate travel ban violators falls

KUALA LUMPUR: The second day of Hari Raya Aidilfitri saw fewer people flouting the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) ban on interstate travel nationwide.

Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said yesterday that 738 vehicles were stopped while attempting to cross state lines, compared to 1,243 vehicles the day before.

He said Selangor recorded the highest number of interstate travel rule-breakers (317), followed by Melaka (80) and Kedah (89).

Ismail Sabri said police also arrested 65 people, remanding 57 of them and issuing police bail to 8 for breaching various rules under the CMCO.

"A total of 387 people were compounded for various offences under the CMCO, and of the 102 police compounds, 31 were for ziarah (visiting) Aidilfitri," he said, adding that the remaining compounds were issued at public areas, including roadblocks.

"I know many feel the police are very harsh, as people visiting during Aidilfitri were also compounded, but overall, only 102 compounds were issued – and then, too, only to those who defied orders after repeated reminders from me and the Health DG."

Ismail Sabri said that from tomorrow, all private vehicles on the road are allowed to carry their full passenger capacity as per the Road Transport Act's requirements.

He added that the MCO gazette has been updated to reflect this. For example, for Multi-Purpose Vehicles (MPVs), up to seven people are allowed on board.

However, he said that there has been no change to the rule dictating that all passengers and drivers must be from the same household.
