Hiding in Hong Kong: Interpol red notice out for Nik Faisal

KUALA LUMPUR: Police are in the midst of seeking Interpol's help to extradite SRC International's former managing director Nik Faisal Ariff Kamil, hiding in Hong Kong with his wife and child.

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador said police have verified information about Nik Faisal's whereabouts and are working with the Hong Kong police to apprehend and bring him back.

"We have an Interpol Red Notice out on his name and have asked for Hong Kong authorities to help apprehend him but the response has not been positive," he said.

Abdul Hamid said police and their counterpart in Hong Kong used to share a very close relationship and had annual events together but they have not been very cooperative with this extradition matter despite Malaysian police providing them with details of Nik Faisal's whereabouts.

"We used to be very close with HK police and have successfully solved many cases involving the two countries but now, it's not the same," he said.

Abdul Hamid said the pursuit of juctice to apprehend Nik Faisal and a few others, including fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho or Jho Low, is still in progress.

"We also found that these fugitives have been traveling from one country to another inside the region between Macau, Hong Kong and even Thailand to avoid being detected".

Abdul Hamid said he too heard that part of the money stolen from the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal was currently being invested in the real estate sector in the Cyprus.

"There is no giving up in arresting these fugitives as their offences involve large sums of public money and we are still determined to get them, regardless how long it may take," Abdul Hamid said.

Meanwhile, speaking on an unrelated case of alleged sexual harassment involving a prominent Muslim activist in February, Abdul Hamid said police have received three more new reports from alleged victims of similar abuse.

"We are still investigating the case, including the three latest reports. It is too soon to conclude but we have recorded the statements of all those involved," he said.

The activitist was accused of molesting a male trainee doctor in February, however police only acted on the doctor's claims recently.
