MACC to probe claims of dirty cops in growing Sungai Buloh scandal

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will probe explosive allegations that policemen and local authorities are taking bribes from illegal business operators in Sungai Buloh to protect their illicit establishments.

MACC deputy chief commissioner (Operations) Datuk Seri Ahmad Khusairi Yahaya said the claims, encompassing gambling dens, illegal shop operators and the sale of contraband cigarettes, has raised serious concerns.

He was referring to two viral videos uploaded to Facebook over the weekend by one Asri Abdul Hamid, who claims that Sungai Buloh policemen and local authorities are on the take to protect the illegal businesses.

"We take these allegations very seriously. I contacted the Integrity and Standards Compliance director Datuk Zamri Yahya today, to work together in this case.

"He has agreed to work together with us, especially on the illegal gambling dens, as such offences are under police jurisdiction."

Ahmad Khusairi also advised the public not to publicise tip-offs related to the issue, as it would hamper investigations.

"Posting information or tip-offs related to the case on social media will not help the investigation process. Doing so can give the culprits an upper hand to evade authorities and dispose of evidence that may be available.

"If you have any information or leads, please channel them to us discreetly".

The videos have placed the spotlight on Sungai Buloh district police chief Superintendent Shafa'atun Abu Bakar and the Shah Alam City Council, which have drawn flak for condemning the videos and denying the existence of illegal businesses in the area.
