Cheras killer pothole stretch patched up 9 times over 4 months

Kuala Lumpur: The last time Jalan Tengah was resurfaced was on Dec 26, the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) informed.

That was the ninth time in four months that maintenance work had been conducted on the stretch where a pothole claimed the life of a 75-year-old motorcyclist on Sunday.

"The location where the incident happened is always monitored by our Public Service Delivery Transformation (PSDT).

"Maintenance work has been conducted since September," DBKL said in a statement today.

In the incident on Sunday, Ho Yan Fee was riding his motorcycle to Mid Valley from Taman Connaught at about 7.30am when his motorcycle went over the waterlogged cavity and he was thrown off his bike for some 30m. Ho died from his injuries at the scene.

While maintenance work had been carried out constantly, DBKL said the damages kept recurring which led to them appointing the Public Works Institute Malaysia (Ikram) to get to the bottom of the problem.

DBKL said that it was always checking and addressing potholes by conducting immediate patch ups in locations where damage was sighted.

"City Hall also has many channels for the public to lodge complaints on potholes. They can do that through our ISPAAA portal, Hotline DBKL (Call Centre), the Public Complaints Bureau, the Housing and Local Government's i-Tegur app via Email, Whatsapp, phone and meeting our branch head face to face.

"We hope that the public helps us out by reporting road damages and defects including potholes."

City Hall said out of 11,979 complaints on damages to road surfaces that it received last year, 100 per cent of the complaints were addressed through improvements.

"A total of 7,735 cases were traced through patrols, the rest were traced through public complaints."

DBKL also extended their condolences to Ho's family.

Meanwhile, sources told the New Straits Times that there was a water source running beneath the road.

The source said investigations were also being done to check whether an adjacent slope was responsible for Sunday's incident.
