60 4WD vehicles stranded in Kuala Krai rescued

KOTA BARU: Up to 60 four-wheel-drive (4WD) vehicles stranded at the Lata Y road near Ulu Tembeling, Kuala Krai on Sunday, were rescued yesterday.

The 60 vehicles, which were among 100 4WDs involved in an expedition, were left stranded in the area when the road was inundated by mud following heavy rains.

Kuala Krai deputy police chief Deputy Superintendent Kamarulzaman Harun said the operation ended at around 6pm yesterday.

He added that the rescue operation was carried out by the organisers of the event using bulldozers and other vehicles.

In the incident on Sunday, nearly 150 participants and supporters of a 4WD expedition were left stuck when the Lata Y road was covered in mud following heavy rains.

The participants, travelling in 100 4WDs, were leaving their base camp in Lata Y when the incident happened at about 5pm.

The group was taking part in a three-day expedition held in conjunction with the recent New Year celebration.

The programme was flagged off by Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Yakob at Sultan Muhammad IV stadium.

Police and firemen were deployed to the scene to monitor the situation as the rescue work was done by the organisers of the event.
