Pahang floods continue to improve with 20,798 in relief centres

KUANTAN: As Pahang enters its 10th day of floods, the situation appears to be improving with 20,798 victims remaining at relief centres compared to 23,927 earlier today.

As of 7pm, the victims, from 5,708 families, are seeking shelter at 209 relief centres at nine districts.

Temerloh, the worst-hit district, continues to record improvement with the number of evacuees dropping from 11,039 in 75 relief centres compared to 11,177 this morning while Pekan registered 2,762 victims from 781 families in 36 relief centres.

Maran has 2,224 evacuees from 628 families in 31 relief centres followed by Bera with 1,617 victims from 451 families in 16 relief centres.

Lipis has 1,149 victims followed by Kuantan with 749 victims, Raub (677), Jerantut (556), and Rompin (25).

The second wave of floods which struck Pahang on Jan 2 saw 32 people in Kuala Sentul becoming the first group to be evacuated to the Kampung Jara hall in Maran.

Meanwhile, a state Civil Defence Force spokesman said several districts except Bera and Temerloh continues to see a drop in flood victims at relief centres.

"The numbers (victims returning home) might be small but it is a positive improvement after the state was hit by floods more than a week ago.

"Flood waters have started to recede in most areas so hopefully, more people will be allowed to return home in the next 48 hours if the promising weather continues.

"Rompin currently only has one relief centre with 25 victims while Kuantan, one of the worst-hit district last week, only has eight relief centres still operating," he said.
