Perak DAP convention complied with SOP, says police

IPOH: Police were not informed about the 19th Perak DAP Convention held yesterday at the Ipoh Convention Centre (ICC), which saw more than 1,500 people attending the event to cast their votes for the party's election.

District police chief assistant superintendent A. Asmadi Abdul Aziz said however, the police gave the go-ahead as the event complied with the standard operating procedure (SOP) under the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO).

"It was a closed-door convention and the district police was not informed about it.

"However, the convention was allowed to proceed under the CMCO's SOP which allows the presence of guests limited to 50 per cent of the capacity of the premises," he said in a statement today.

A.Asmadi said however, police received a report on a commotion that broke out during the convention.

He said the report was lodged at the Sungai Senam Police Station here yesterday for breaching the SOP when chaos occurred.

"Police confirmed that there was a chaos at the convention yesterday at about 11am during the party's polls.

"The fracas was in the form of a verbal argument and the committee there managed to keep the situation under control without any untoward incident," he added.

It was reported yesterday that the commotion broke out after factions from M. Kulasegaran and Thomas Su Keong Siong claimed the election process was being held unfairly.

Su, who is also Kampar MP claimed that the registration was supposed to close at 10am but after the time was up, the organiser called branches which had yet to register to do so in order to vote.

He accused the election committee of only reaching out to delegates from factions associated with Nga Kor Ming and advisor Ngeh Koo Ham, who at the time had yet to register to vote.
