96 accidents involving p-hailing riders recorded in 2020

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 91 accident cases related to riders in p-Hailing services, which involves the delivery of parcels and food items using motorcycles, were recorded last year.

An infographic issued on p-Hailing in Malaysia by the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros), stated that 17 of the total cases recorded last year resulted in fatalities.

The infographic, the data of which was based on statistics by police's Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department, said 64 cases involving p-Hailing services involved severe injuries.

It also stated that a total of 2,576 deaths involving motorcycle riders were recorded during the implementation of various stages of the Movement Control Order (MCO) within nine months of the same year.

"It is estimated that there are 60,000 riders in p-Hailing services in Malaysia," read the infographic.

Meanwhile, a survey conducted by Miros found that 70 per cent of p-Hailing riders were riding dangerously especially during peak hours.

The survey stated that 57 per cent of the riders were found to have stopped at yellow boxes or pedestrian crossings while 15 per cent of the riders were found to have beaten the red light.

The survey also found that 15 per cent of p-Hailing riders were found to have used mobile phones while on the road, going against traffic (seven per cent) and made illegal U-turns (five per cent).
