Targeted approach to help economy working, says PM

PUTRAJAYA: The targeted approach adopted by the government to alleviate the economic crisis brought on by the global Covid-19 pandemic has helped restore the country's economy.

Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said this was reflected in the sales value that the country's distributive trade sector registered last year.

"I welcome all the programmes implemented by the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry towards stimulating the country's economic growth.

"The Buy Malaysia Products Campaign and the Malaysia (Mega) Sales Programme implemented to encourage and boost local economic activity have produced outcome, with the distributive trade sector registering sales values of RM1.248 trillion in 2020.

"This clearly proves that the implementation of the targeted approach introduced by the government can help towards the recovery of the nation's economy to the level before the pandemic hit the country," said Muhyiddin in his message when visiting the ministry here today.

The prime minister also conducted a visit to the ministry's Enforcement Command Centre located in the same building.

As the custodian of the domestic trade and consumer affairs in the country, Muhyiddin said the ministry must continue to play an important role not only to regulate the sector but also to ensure smooth implementation of programmes and activities to boost the country's economy.

"Bank Negara Malaysia recently projected that the country's economy is expected to expand between six and 7.5 per cent this year.

"This will depend on a number of fundamental factors such as the recovery of domestic activity coupled with increased external demand.

"To achieve such an economic growth target, cooperation from all parties is very important to ensure our country's economy continues to be on track," he said.
