Record 6,075 new Covid-19 cases, Selangor breaches 2k mark [NSTTV]

KUALA LUMPUR: The Covid-19 pandemic in the country is showing no signs of abating with another 6,075 new cases today, the highest number of daily infections recorded in the country so far.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in a statement said the daily new cases brought the cumulative number of cases in the country to 485,496, of which 47,340 are active cases.

The highest before this was on Jan 31, when the country recorded 5,298 cases.

"Of the new cases reported today, 6,072 are local transmissions (involving 5,452 Malaysians and 620 foreigners), while the remaining three are imported cases (involving a Malaysian and two foreigners)," he said.

Dr Noor Hisham said Selangor registered the highest number of new infections at 2,251, followed by Johor (699) and Kuala Lumpur (660).

Other states which recorded the three-digit number of new infections are Kedah (445), Kelantan (441), Sarawak (323), Perak (220), and Terengganu (203).

"Also recording three-digit increases are Negri Sembilan (189), Penang (183), Sabah (160), Pahang (150), and Melaka (122).

"Labuan logged 14 new cases, followed by Putrajaya (nine) and Perlis (six)," he said.

He added that 559 people were being treated at the Intensive Care Units (ICU), of which 303 had been intubated.

Meanwhile, the number of Covid-19 patients who have recovered and been discharged from hospitals as of noon today stood at 3,516, bringing the total number of recoveries to 436,116 (89.83 per cent).

On the country's death toll, Dr Noor Hisham said it had increased to 2,040 after 46 fatalities, including that of a foreigner, were reported.

Of the new deaths, Dr Noor Hisham said 19 cases were reported in Selangor, seven in Sarawak, six in Johor and four Kelantan.

"Two deaths each were recorded in Sabah, Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Kedah, while one each in Negri Sembilan and Melaka.

Aged between 17 and 91, most of the deceased had a medical history of diabetes, high blood pressure, heart, and chronic kidney diseases among others.

Only seven of the deceased had no chronic ailment.

"The oldest patient, a local 91-year-old woman who had a medical history of diabetes and high blood pressure, died at the Sarikei Hospital in Sarawak.

"The youngest patient, a 17-year-old man who had leukaemia, died in Ampang Hospital," said Dr Noor Hisham.

Yesterday, Malaysia recorded 47 Covid-19 deaths, the highest since the pandemic hit the country.
