Met Department issues red alert weather warning for districts in Perak

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), in its latest weather update at 1.40am, issued a red alert for several districts in Perak.

This after it issued a red alert for districts in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Pahang earlier tonight.

Manjung, Kinta, Perak Tengah, Kampar, Bagan Datuk, Hilir Perak, Batang Padang and Muallim can expect ontinuous heavy rain today.

The red alert was earlier issued for Sabak Bernam, Kuala Selangor, Hulu Selangor, Klang, Gombak, Petaling, Kuala Langat and Hulu Langat in Selangor; Kuala Lumpur; as well as Tanah Tinggi, Cameron, Lipis, Raub, Jerantut, Bentong and Kuantan in Pahang.

Several other districts in the peninsula were issued orange (severe-level continuous rain warning) and yellow alerts (alert-level for continuous rain warning).

The orange districts are in Kedah (Kuala Muda, Kulim and Bandar Baharu); Penang; Perak (Kerian, Larut, Matang, Selama, and Kuala Kangsar); Kelantan (Gua Musang); Pahang (Temerloh, Maran and Pekan); Selangor (Sepang); Putrajaya and Negri Sembilan (Jelebu).

The districts issued a yellow alert are in Perlis; Kedah (Langkawi, Kubang Pasu, Kota Setar, Pokok Sena, Padang Terap, Yan, Pendang, Suk and Baling); Perak (Hulu Perak); Kelantan (Tumpat, Pasir Mas, Kota Baru, Jeli, Tanah Merah, Bachok, Machang, Pasir Puteh and Kuala Krai); Terengganu, Pahang (Bera and Rompin); Negri Sembilan (Seremban, Port Dickson, Kuala Pulah, Rembau, Jempol and Tampin); Melaka and Johor (Tangkak, Segamat, Muar, and Batu Pahat).

Yesterday, MetMalaysia director-general Muhammad Helmi Abdullah told the New Straits Times, that the low tropical pressure system that is present in the Straits of Melaka is causing heavy rains in almost all states in the peninsula.

He added that the other factor for the heavy downpour was the relatively strong monsoon rains.

"Currently, the country is experiencing the northeast monsoon… this continuous heavy rain is also due to the tropical depression," he said.
