Dr M transferred to normal ward

KUALA LUMPUR: After spending almost a week at the National Heart Institute (IJN) Coronary Care Unit (CCU), former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has been transferred to the normal ward today.

His daughter Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir in a statement today said the Langkawi Member of Parliament was given the green light to transfer wards by his doctors following his recovery progress.

"Based on the assessment by the team of specialist doctors who treated Dr Mahathir, he was found to be recovering.

"Today, Dr Mahathir was transferred out of the CCU to a room at the normal ward of IJN."

Marina added that both Dr Mahathir and wife, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali are not allowed to receive visitors at the IJN for the time being.

"Dr Mahathir and all our family members would like to extend our appreciation to all parties who have been praying for his full recovery," she said.

Yesterday, Marina said Dr Mahathir, 96, who is being warded at the IJN's CCU since Jan 20, is showing signs of improvement following his follow-up treatment to an elective medical procedure earlier this month.

She also said her father was showing progress and even managed to joke with his family members.

The Pejuang founder was admitted to IJN last Thursday for a follow-up treatment on an elective procedure on Jan 8.

On Dec 16 last year, he was admitted to IJN for a full medical check-up and further observation. He was discharged on Dec 22.

Dr Mahathir underwent two heart bypass operations in 1989 and 2007.
