Malaysia continues to record two-digit Covid-19 fatalities, slight dip in cases

KUALA LUMPUR: The country continued to record two-digit Covid-19 fatalities while new daily cases showed a slight dip with 2,636 infections on Wednesday (Aug 24).

Health Ministry's CovidNow portal today reported that five of the new cases were imported while 2,631 were locally transmitted cases.

On Aug 24, the country reported 2,722 daily Covid-19 infections and 11 deaths.

The new cases bring the total number of infections in the country to 4,765,188.

Of the fatalities five were classified as brought-in-dead cases.

This brings the total deaths in the country to 36,177 since the pandemic hit two years ago.

Johor recorded the highest number of daily Covid-19 fatalities with four cases followed by three in Selangor and one each in Kedah, Perak, Sarawak and Sabah respectively.

As of Wednesday, there were 34,970 active Covid-19 cases in the country.

Of this, 33, 500 individuals were placed under home quarantine, and 24 patients were treated at low-risk quarantine and treatment centres.

There are 1,379 Covid-19 patients currently hospitalised with 67 patients admitted to intensive care units (ICU).

Of the patients in the ICU, 36 need ventilator support. The country's overall ICU utilisation rate stood at 63.9 per cent as of yesterday.

The portal also reported 3, 206 patients who recovered from the coronavirus on Wednesday, bringing the cumulative number of recoveries to 4,694,041.
