Flash floods hit 10 areas in Johor Baru [NSTTV]

JOHOR BARU: Ten areas here are inundated following flash floods brought about by continuous heavy rain since early this morning.

The Johor Flood Management Committee secretariat in a statement said as of noon today, the affected areas include Batu 10, Skudai; Kampung Datuk Sulaiman Menteri; Tabika Kemas, Skudai Kiri and Kampung Mohd Amin.

"Also flooded are Kampung Ubi, Kampung Tiram Duku, Kampung Peladang, Kampung Baru Muafakat, Kampung Pekajang and Kampung Paya Mengkuang," the statement said.

Checks in several affected areas found that flash floods caused some residents' homes to be inundated.

In Batu Pahat, two temporary evacuation centres (PPS) were opened after flash floods struck Kampung Seri Bengkal and Kampung Bintang Peserai.

"PPS Sekolah Agama Seri Bengkal opened as early as 8am, accommodating 29 victims from 11 families, mostly residents of Kampung Seri Bengkal.

"Meanwhile, PPS Sekolah Kebangsaan Peserai opened at noon today to accommodate affected residents from Kampung Bintang Peserai," the statement added.

At the same time, storms also hit Pontian and Muar.

Based on the monitoring carried out by the Johor chapter of the Civil Defence Force, in Pontian, Kampung Sungai Naga in Api-Api, Parit Haji Omar in Air Baloi and  Kayu Ara Pasong were hit by the storm.

According to the statement, two areas in  Muar were hit by the storm — Kampung Parit Jamil and Sabah Awor.

"Floods occurred because of rain and the clash of tides."

However, it said several areas saw flood waters receding.
