Perodua Axia catches fire on Penang Bridge, four survive

GEORGE TOWN: Four people survived when the Perodua Axia they were in caught fire after being involved in an accident at Km 3 of the Penang Bridge early this morning.

Prai fire and rescue station operation officer Syamzul Razman Abdul Rahman said the accident happened near the Prai industrial area, from Prai heading towards the island.

He said they received an emergency call about 1.08am.

"When we arrived at the scene, we found the Perodua Axia completely burnt after being involved in an accident with a Mercedes Benz.

"There were four people inside, a man and three women.

"All of them were rescued by members of the public, who witnessed the accident," he said today.

Syamzul said the fire was successfully controlled and fully extinguished at 1.39am.

"Overhaul work was carried out and the operation was completed at 2.20am.

"The victims, who was rescued, were taken to the Seberang Jaya Hospital by ambulance," he added.

Photos and video of the incident have since gone viral.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident, a woman, in her 50s, sustained 60 per cent burns following a gas explosion at her flat in Taman Sri Bayu, Bayan Lepas here this morning.

The Seri Balik Pulau fire and rescue station was alerted to the incident about 9.18am.

Operation officer Zaiful Arif Mat Ariffin said, when they arrived at the unit, they found gas leakage which led to the explosion.

"There was a woman inside, who sustained 60 per cent burns.

"The fire was put out by neighbours before we arrived," he said.

The victim was taken to the Penang Hospital for treatment.
