Transition of official vehicles running on fuel to EV to start next year: Amirudin

SHAH ALAM: The use of electric vehicles (EV) for official vehicles in the state would kick off beginning next year, said Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.

He said his administration would expedite the use of low-carbon modes of transportation.

"This will be done through the transition of official vehicles of the state councillors and department heads from vehicles running on fuel to electric vehicles next year, provided that an optimal financial use solution can be achieved with service providers," he said during the tabling of the state's 2024 Budget today.

He said in line with the state government's aspiration to become the first carbon-neutral state in the country, the Selangor Smart Bus service would also begin to switch from buses running on fuel to electric buses.

"For a start, two buses will begin their operation in January.

"This transition will be implemented in phases until all Selangor Smart Bus services use the electric bus," he said.

Amirudin added the state government aimed at providing 1,000 electric vehicle charging station units, with an allocation of RM1 million.

"It will be accomplished through a joint venture between private corporations, including Gentari, which is owned by Petronas, Tenaga Nasional Bhd, and others.

"This administration will be developing green lanes for the installation of charging stations and battery replacement areas for motorcycles, which will be announced soon."
