Police appeal for witnesses of Ipoh fiery car crash

IPOH: Police have urged witnesses to come forward to assist investigations into an incident where three people were burnt to death after their car collided with a garbage truck in Jalan Bercham here yesterday.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Yahaya Hassan said police were informed of the incident involving a Proton Perdana and a garbage truck at 8.28pm.

Yahaya said that the car was driven by a 20-year-old man and there were two passengers in the car, both aged 16 who were the driver's brother and cousin.

"Initial investigation found that the car coming from the direction of Tanjung Rambutan had lost control of the vehicle while passing through the winding stretch before it collided with the garbage truck coming from the opposite direction.

"Due to the strong impact, the car was pinned underneath the garbage truck and caught fire. The driver and passengers of the car died on the spot, while the driver and four people in the garbage trucks escaped unhurt," he said in a statement today.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving

He added that police are urging any witnesses of the fatal incident to come forward or to contact Ipoh district police headquarters' Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department chief Deputy Superintendent Koo Boon Kuat at 016-4173222 to assist in the investigation.

"We would like to advise the public to be aware, careful and sensitive to the road conditions especially during the wet weather to reduce the risk of road accidents," he said.

Yahaya added that the parents of the victims have been informed and the post-mortem would be conducted at the Forensic Unit of Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital (HRPB) here, today.
