Kelantan district police chiefs told to be prepared for worsening floods

KOTA BARU: All district police chiefs are told to be prepared for any eventuality of worsening floods to hit the state from now on.

Kelantan police chief Datuk Muhamad Zaki Harun said he has also issued a directive to all the monitoring teams to conduct patrols regularly as well as to check the locations which have been identified as flood prone areas.

"Based on the prediction by the Malaysia Meteorology Department (METMalaysia), continuous rain will hit a few districts in Kelantan until Nov 24.

"I would like to confirm that several flood relief centres were opened in Pasir Puteh today to accommodate flood victims.

"The cause of evacuation in Pasir Puteh is believed to have been due to blocked drainage, which was unable to cope with continuous rain," he said in a statement.

Overall, he said the weather conditions in all districts and river water level trends are normal except for Semerak river near Melor bridge, Bachok.

"The river level there had reached 7.9m which is above the 'alert' level, this evening.

"All major roads are passable for motorists. The current situation is under control," he added.

He then advised villagers, especially those living in the low-lying areas to be more alert and to always obey the instructions and guidance issued by the authorities when it involves evacuation.

Meanwhile, checks at Golok river in Rantau Panjang this evening showed an upward trend for the river.

As of 7.30pm, the river was recorded at 7.9m which is 0.9m above its alert level.

Despite the rising water, villagers continued crossing over to the Thai side of the border, going about their daily activities.
