2022 AG's Report: Sports facilities, equipment at NSC stadium poorly maintained

KUALA LUMPUR: The 2022 Auditor-General's Report detected poorly-maintained sports facilities and equipment.Auditor General Datuk Wan Suraya Wan Mohd Radzi said that an audit inspection on Jan 30 this year at the National Sports Council (NSC) Mini Stadium, Bukit Jalil for athletics and high jump training, found that the condition of the track was already worn, thinned and dilapidated.

The high jump pole has been damaged and training mats that are no longer suitable are used for athlete training, the report said.

Further checks found that the track and equipment was readied during the 2017 Kuala Lumpur SEA Games on March 17, 2017.

An athletic trainer said that the facility needs to be upgraded and maintained to help athletes go through training activities smoothly and perfectly.

"The deteriorating condition of the track and broken high jump equipment is due to the absence of a preventive maintenance and repair programme for the training equipment.

"This affects the smoothness of the athlete's training activities," she said.

Furthermore, on a visit by the auditing team on June 25 this year at the Malaysian National Velodrome, Nilai found a Ridley-branded Para Athlete Para Podium bicycle for road cycling training as well as participation in major sports tournaments and games still being used by para athletes.

The bicycle has suffered damage to the bicycle frame due to an accident.

The repair action was taken by the sports coach of the cyclists by patching (welding) the damage.

"An interview with the mechanic in charge stated that if the same bicycle is still in use and there is an accident or further damage to the bicycle, it could endanger the athletes," said in the report.
