Firefighters save 18 trapped guests, a woman faints in harrowing elevator ordeal

MELAKA: Eighteen people, including two women, were rescued by firefighters after being trapped in an elevator at a four-star hotel on Jalan Merdeka, Taman Melaka Raya, here, today.

One of the women fainted after being trapped for about 20 minutes.

The Central Melaka Fire and Rescue Department Commander, Omar Husein @ Mohsin, said they received a call about the incident from the hotel at 10.12am.

He said a team of seven members, including the Emergency Medical Rescue Service (EMRS) members, rushed to the location.

"Upon arrival, the operations team found the elevator stuck between the 21st and 22nd floors with 18 individuals, 16 men and two women, inside the elevator.

"After successfully opening the elevator door, one of the female victims who experienced shortness of breath had fainted and was handed over to the medical team for treatment, while all male victims were safe," he said in a statement today.

Omar said the rescue operation began at 10.30 am and was completed by 11.05am.
