KUCHING: Kuching-Pontianak flights are expected to be revived next year, according to Sarawak Transport Minister, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin.
He said Indonesia had agreed in principle for the flight operations during the Brunei – Indonesia – Malaysia – Philippines East Asean Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) meeting held last month.
"However, we are not sure of the flight frequency because we have not discussed the operational part yet but AirAsia has shown keen interest to service the route," he told a press conference at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting here today (November 27).
In his winding-up speech earlier, Lee said Malaysia had highlighted in the Air Linkages Working Group that the BIMP-EAGA routes connecting Sarawak and Pontianak, Indonesia have been suspended since March last year.
"In the meeting, Malaysia proposed to the Indonesian government to resume operations of the Supadio International Airport in Pontianak, Indonesia," he said.
Meanwhile, Lee said bus services between the border of Singkawang-Kuching would start on December 1, with two buses serving the route for a start.
He added that the Sarawak state government would expand the bus services to the border from time to time. — BERNAMA
