Driver pinned after sand-laden lorry crashes into Senai North toll booth barrier

JOHOR BARU: A sand-laden lorry driver crashed his vehicle into a bullnose barrier of the Senai North toll plaza, near here, today.

In the 10.10am accident, the 29-year-old driver who is believed to have been unable to stop the lorry due to faulty brakes, was pinned to his seat due to the impact of the crash.

The toll booth located at KM19.2 of the North South Expressway (NSE) was not damaged, as the driver of the lorry had crashed into a bullnose barrier installed in front of the booth.

A bullnose barrier is a specially designed safety feature used at all toll plazas in the country.

The curved end barriers minimises the impact force when a vehicle hits the barrier.

Although the lorry was badly damaged, there was no other damage or injuries to other motorists or toll concessioner staff.

Fire and Rescue Department operation commander Abd Malik Abd Rahman said the victim was extricated from the wrecked lorry cabin and rushed in to the hospital for treatment.

The department's 15 personnel despatched to the scene took more than an hour to clear the toll booth area of debris and sand for the safety of other motorists.
