99-year-old Ismail is still strong enough to be relocated to flood relief centre

KUALA BERANG: "I am used to relocating to temporary flood relief centres because this has become a routine every year."

Ismail Musa, 99, who is from Kampung Kemat here said the routine of moving to a relief centre has been done repeatedly since he lived in the village more than 70 years ago.

He said in the past, the situation was different because there were no technological facilities that display the number of flood victims moving to relief centres as there is now.

"This is what happens when we live in a low-lying area and being near the river, which is prone to overflowing during heavy rain which occurs every year.

" I used to it because the floods occur every year and my age has also reached 100," he said.

His daughter, Fatimah Ismail, 70, said despite his age, her father is still strong enough to be relocated to temporary relief centre in Kampung Kemat. She said usually, the rescue team arrives early to assist victims.

"It usually is not going to be a long for us to be evacuated at the relief centre. Only one, two or at most, three days. The water level is still high in the house area.

"It has become a routine for us here, whether we are staying for a short or extended period in the relief centre. The experience of facing floods often serves as a guide to us to always be prepared every time the monsoon season is here," she said.

She said her father can still take care of himself, including moving to the relief centres. She said she only needs to take care of her husband, Ramli Hamzah, 78, who is paralysed on one side.

"Since my husband is paralysed, my daughter brought her to her house in Dungun. She can take care of her father well.

"If it was the relief centre, it might be difficult for me to take care of my husband due to various constraints, so my daughter should take him home for a while. My father and I can be at the relief centre," she said.
