Senior citizen dies in crash while taking granddaughter home from hospital in Baling

BALING: A 61-year-old man who was taking his granddaughter home from Baling Hospital, died in an accident along the Kuala Pegang-Parit Panjang trunk road here yesterday.

The deceased, identified as Mohamad Norzizan Ismail, died on the spot when his Yamaha motorcycle collided with an Isuzu D-max pickup truck.

His nine-year-old granddaughter, Nur Damia Qaisara Norazlimi, who was riding pillion, sustained minor injuries.

Baling district police chief Superintendent Shamsudin Mamat said the police received distress calls from the public regarding the incident at around 7.30 pm.

"The pickup truck was heading towards Parit Panjang from Kuala Pegang while the deceased was heading from Baling Hospital towards Kampung Kerawai in Sik to take his granddaughter home.

"As the pickup turned right to enter a petrol station near Kampung Mengkuang Masjid, the deceased attempted to overtake but collided with the front-right side of the truck. He died on the spot," he said in a statement today.

Shamsudin said the case in being investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

"The body was sent to Kulim Hospital for a post mortem examination yesterday," he added.
